Rabat – The Government of Japan has just appointed Ghita Lahlou El-Yacoubi as Honorary Consul General of Japan in Casablanca, succeeding Larbi Belarbi, who held the position until May 2021.
“The Embassy of Japan hopes that the appointment of El-Yacoubi will contribute to further strengthening the excellent relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and Japan,” the embassy said in a statement.
The embassy further expressed its gratitude to Larbi Belarbi, CEO of Renault, who previously served as Honorary Consul of Japan in Morocco for 10 years, stating, “His excellent work and collaboration have contributed to developing economic ties and enhancing bilateral relations between Japan and Morocco.”
In 2019, King Mohammed VI appointed El-Yacoubi as a member of the Special Commission on the Development Model.
Born in 1967 in Safi city, El-Yacoubi graduated from the Ecole Centrale of Paris and returned to Morocco in 1994 to join the ONA group, an industrial, financial and service company, where she held several positions.
She later joined SAHAM group, an African investment company, as a General Manager of CNIA Saada Insurance. Ghita Lahlou was also a member of the Supervisory Board of SAHAM Assurance.
She is an active member of civil society and part of the Moroccan Association of Offshoring and the Moroccan Association of Customer Relations Centers (AMRC).
Lahlou is also the president of the “Les Citoyens” association.
She is the Vice-President of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) since January 2020.
Morocco-Japan relations have seen a significant increase in bilateral diplomacy and trade in recent years. The language itself, Japanese, became a topic of interest among many young Moroccans.
The two countries have signed a first Memorandum of Cooperation concerning land-use planning, town planning, infrastructure, and investment in March 2021.
In January 2020, Morocco’s Minister Delegate to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohcine Jazouli, and Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Keisuke Suzuki, chaired the fifth Morocco-Japan Joint Commission meeting in Rabat.
