Rabat- The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) updated its travel advisories list yesterday, Monday, October 4, and Morocco was one of eight destinations to improve its ranking.
According to the updated list of travel advisories from the CDC, Morocco has gone from category 4, with a “very high COVID-19 risk,” to Category 3 (high COVID-19 risk).
Prior to traveling to Category 3 destinations, the CDC recommends a full immunization schedule. Unvaccinated travelers are recommended to avoid non-essential travel to these destinations.
According to the criteria set by the CDC, a destination that is categorized as level 3 is one where there have been between 100 and 500 cases per 100,000 people in the past 28 days.
On August 23, the CDC added Morocco to its Level 4 list, deeming the North African country to represent a “very high” risk of COVID infection and urging travelers not to travel there unless it is absolutely necessary.
The improvement in Morocco’s health situation has been reflected in the CDC’s ranking. To go from Level 4 to Level 3 in a matter of two months signifies a significant improvement in the North African country’s epidemiological situation.
On October 1, the Moroccan authorities lifted the health emergency restrictions imposed throughout the country due to a substantial improvement in the Country’s COVID figures.
CDC has upgraded seven other countries to “level 3” as a result of their improving epidemiological situation: Argentina, France, Iceland, Lesotho, Nepal, Portugal, and South Africa.
Morocco has fully vaccinated over 19,197,916 of the population as of Tuesday, October 5, according to the country’s Ministry of Health.
People who received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine reached 22,902,691.
Morocco seeks to vaccinate 80% or 33 million of its population by December in order to reach herd immunity. The vaccination campaign also includes children aged between 12-17.
On Monday, October 4, Morocco announced the launch of a third COVID-19 vaccination campaign, or “booster shot” for Moroccan citizens and residents, further strengthening the country’s immunity to the virus.
