Rabat – Gabon’s Foreign Affairs Minister Pacôme Moubelet Boubeya has announced his country will organize a series of events in Laayoune in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
Boubeya made the announcement on Friday, November 5, following his meeting with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad.
During the meeting, Boubeya thanked Morocco for its support in hosting an earlier event in Laayoune to commemorate the independence day of the Gabonese Republic.

The central African country has been a strong supporter of Morocco’s territorial integrity vis a vis Western Sahara. Gabon opened a consulate general in Laayoune in early 2020 and is planning to host a new series of events to further emphasize its relations with Morocco, as well as its support for Rabat’s Western Sahara stance.
The upcoming series of events titled “Le Gabon a Laayoune” (Gabon in Laayoune) will celebrate Gabonese cultural heritage, display the African nation’s various products amid a series of visits to several ongoing projects in Laayoune.

Gabon currently has an embassy in Rabat as well as a consulate general in Laayoune. Its strong support for Morocco’s efforts to restore its pre-colonial borders in the Western Sahara region prompted the country’s officials to opt for Laayoune for the celebration of its independence day.
Boubeya’s diplomatic meeting with Bourita came ahead of a November 6 visit by Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who is visiting Rabat to meet with King Mohammed VI.
