Rabat – Ali Bongo Ondimba, president of Gabon since October 2009, is scheduled to visit Morocco on Saturday, November 6, 2021, to meet King Mohammed VI and discuss the ties between the two countries.

“President Ali Bongo will certainly have the opportunity to meet King Mohammed VI, to discuss the excellent relations of friendship and brotherhood that unite Morocco and Gabon,” said Pacôme Moubelet-Boubeya, the Gabonese Minister of Foreign Affairs in a statement to the ministry.

In order to prepare for the official visit Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita held a meeting with Moubelet-Boubeya in which they underlined the main courses of action set to be carried out as part of the two countries’ cooperation.

The Gabonese Minister mentioned the possibility of organizing a large commission between Gabon and Morocco, as well as Gabon’s eagerness to strengthen trade relations between the two countries.

“We thank the Kingdom of Morocco for having supported the Republic of Gabon in the organization of a cultural day dedicated to our country in Laayoune, an event that was a major success,” affirmed the Gabonese minister.

“We plan to organize many other events in Morocco to further reinforce the Gabonese presence in the Kingdom,” he added.

Moubelet-Boubeya also expressed his country’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Western Sahara, insisting that Gabon will be demanding clarifications from Algeria regarding the strained relations with Morocco.

In August 2021, after Algeria announced its decision to cut diplomatic ties with Morocco, the Deputy of Gabon’s National Assembly, Germain Biahodjow, expressed his regret for the turn of events.

The Gabonese official also commended Morocco’s commitment to remain a loyal ally for the Algerian people despite Algiers’ decision

In 2018, President Bongo finished his medical recovery in Morocco, at the request of King Mohammed VI, who insisted he continued receiving medical care in the Kingdom instead of in London.

The mutual support and cooperation between Morocco and Gabon continues to give new force to bilateral relations.
