Fez – Ajax Amsterdam Moroccan right-back Noussair Mazraoui has broken his silence over his dispute with Vahid Halilhodzic, the coach of Morocco’s national football team.
Mazraoui is having a wonderful season with his club, and his recent eye-catching performances are raising questions about why he is no longer called up to the Moroccan national team.
The Ajax right-back told his version of the story in an interview on the famous Dutch “Bij Andy in de auto” TV podcast. In the interview, which was aired on November 9, Mazroui explained that his absence from the national squad is due to a minor dispute he had with Halilhodzic when he showed up late for training.
“When I arrived, the coach was very upset with me. During training, it was very hot and the coach asked us to drink every 5 minutes. During one of the breaks I didn’t drink, because I wasn’t thirsty anymore.”
Mazraoui continued: “[Halilhodzic] came to ask me to drink again, which I politely refused, but he nervously insisted. To calm the situation, [Romain] Saiss gave me a bottle of water, but I poured it on the floor. That’s how the problem started.”
This contrasts with Halildozic’s version. When asked recently about Mazroui’s absence from his latest squad lists, the Bosnian coach argued that he doesn’t accept a player who doesn’t train or refuses to play. “Mazraoui had refused to play,” he said.
With Mazroui’s recent performances, it remains to be seen whether Halilhodzic will consider selecting the Ajax right-back.
