Rabat – Ecuador will celebrate its historic qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an unexpected national holiday after President Daniel Noboa declared Friday an official day off in honor of the national team’s achievement.
The announcement came shortly after Ecuador secured a memorable 2-1 victory over Germany in its final Group Stage match, sealing a place in the Round of 32 for the first time under the tournament’s expanded format.
In a post on X, President Noboa praised the players and coaching staff for overcoming criticism and difficult moments throughout their campaign.
“Thank you to the players and coaching staff for never giving up despite the criticism and challenges. You have brought immense joy to the Ecuadorian people,” Noboa wrote before announcing Friday as a national holiday to allow citizens to celebrate the achievement.Â
Although Germany suffered its first defeat of the tournament, the European side had already secured qualification and still finished top of the group with six points. Ecuador claimed one of the qualifying spots after finishing third with four points, earning its place among the 32 teams advancing to the knockout stage.
The victory sparked celebrations across Ecuador, with supporters taking to the streets to commemorate one of the country’s most memorable World Cup achievements.
Ecuador will now turn its attention to the Round of 32, where it will look to continue its impressive run on football’s biggest stage.
