Fez – King Mohammed VI sent a congratulatory message to Audrey Azoulay for being reelected as chief of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on November 9.

The monarch expressed his warm congratulations to the reappointed director-general of the UN body, wishing her good luck with the implementation of her high-level mission.

The king highlighted that this “renewed trust” that was placed in the diplomat is “an appreciation of the efforts she is making” to enhance the UNESCO-led mission of establishing peace, solidarity, and understanding worldwide.

King Mohamed VI emphasized that Morocco strongly defends pluralism and diversity.

Morocco supports both UNESCO’s commitment to promoting education in developing countries, and its efforts to preserve world cultural heritage and promote sustainable development initiatives, the King said.

Audrey Azoulay, a French diplomat of Moroccan-Jewish descent, was reelected for a second four-year term to serve as the director-general of UNESCO. She is the second woman to occupy the position, following the former UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.

Azoulay has held the position since 2017 and has shown good performance in her previous term in the position.

UNESCO is commemorating its 75th anniversary on November 9-24 in Paris. The General Conference drew 193 UN member states, including Morocco, which serves as the conference’s chair for the Arab countries group. Leading Morocco’s delegation is Chakib Benmoussa, Minister of National Education, Preschool, and Sports.
