Rabat – Along with air travel, Morocco will also suspend maritime trips from and to France today, starting at 11:59 p.m.
The decision will be effective until further notice but the suspension will not cover commercial shipment, AFP quoted an official at the Ministry of Transport on Saturday as saying.
“As part of the measures taken by Morocco to contain the pandemic and consolidate the achievements in terms of the fight against the spread of Covid-19, the maritime transport of passengers from and to France is suspended from Sunday 28 November 2021 at 11.59pm,” the official told AFP.
The measures from Moroccan authorities come amid concerns following the outbreak of a new variant of COVID known as Omicron. Health professionals are concerned that the new variant could weaken the effectiveness of the existing vaccines.
Morocco’s measures will also affect air travel from and to France a minute before midnight today.
Initially, Morocco announced that air suspension would be effective on Friday. Authorities then delayed the entry into force of the new measure to give travelers some time to plan their way back to Morocco or to France before the suspension.
Morocco also banned access to travelers coming from seven countries, including South Africa, where Omicron appeared this month.
