Rabat – The halftime break during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final is expected to last significantly longer than the standard 15 minutes, as FIFA prepares a major entertainment spectacle featuring some of the world’s biggest music stars.Â
According to The Times, the interval at the tournament’s showpiece match could be extended to between 25 and 30 minutes to accommodate an elaborate halftime performance, marking a significant departure from football’s traditional matchday format.Â
The report says the entertainment lineup is expected to include global artists such as Justin Bieber, Shakira, Madonna, Burna Boy, BTS, and Coldplay. Some performers are reportedly set to appear during the pre-match ceremony, while others will take center stage during the extended halftime show.Â
Under the Laws of the Game established by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), halftime intervals should not exceed 15 minutes.Â
However, The Times reports that the referee assigned to the final will formally authorize the extended break, indicating that FIFA has already made the necessary organizational arrangements for the exception.
The governing body has experimented with a similar format before. During the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final, halftime lasted approximately 24 minutes to allow for a musical performance.Â
That decision drew criticism from finalists Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, with concerns raised over the disruption to players’ rhythm and match preparation.
Despite those concerns, FIFA appears determined to expand the entertainment element of its flagship tournaments.
FIFA World Cup Chief Operating Officer Heimo Schirgi has previously described the closing ceremony as a celebration that will combine music, culture, and football before the world champions are crowned.
The longer halftime could also have sporting implications. Teams that rely on high pressing, sustained intensity, or momentum may have to adjust to an unusually long interruption, while players will benefit from additional recovery time before returning for the decisive second half.Â
FIFA has yet to officially confirm the duration of the halftime break or announce the final list of performers. More details about the ceremony are expected in the days leading up to the World Cup final.
