Western Sahara: Latin American, Caribbean Parliament Renews Support for Morocco’s Position

Rabat – The Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino) has renewed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Jorge Pizarro Esteban, the president of the regional group, said the parliament shares “Morocco’s position on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara. Our position has been expressed at the level of national parliaments and at the regional level.”

Esteban made his remarks in Madrid on Friday after a meeting with the presidents of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, and the House of Councillors, Enaam Mayara.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 143rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The symposium is taking place from November 26-30 in Madrid.

Esteban added that the position of Latin American countries vis-a-vis the Sahara has “radically changed in recent years in favor of the kingdom.”

He said that the change is attributed to the inter-parliamentary political dialogue, which he described as “positive” between Morocco and the various member countries of Parlatino.

“The countries of Latin America know more and more the reality and the historical facts related to this question,” Esteban added.

The Latin American politician emphasized the importance of Morocco’s role in the coordination and facilitation of communication and rapprochement between African groups, Arab, Latin American, and Caribbean countries.

He also welcomed Morocco’s determination to implement the founding declaration of the Afro-Latin American Parliamentary Forum (AFROLAC).

Mayara welcomed the Latin parliament’s position and its strategic cooperation with the Moroccan parliament.

He also called for moving forward in capitalization gains made by the two parties in the service in the interests of the peoples of the regions of Africa and Latin America.

For his part, Talbi Alami emphasized that the parliamentary forum bringing together the parliaments of African, Latin American, and Caribbean countries could constitute a space for common action and a mechanism to promote parliamentary political dialogue.

“The consolidation of relations between Morocco and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean is part of the Kingdom’s efforts to promote south-south cooperation under the enlightened leadership of HM King Mohammed VI,” he said.
