Rabat – Moroccan robotics center Robots & More and Spanish-German renewable energy company Siemens Gamesa announced today the launch of a new partnership to promote educational robotics in Moroccan schools.
Robots & More is a young Moroccan start-up operating in the field of education technology, providing youth with various educational programs and learning equipment.
Siemens Gamesa is a company which specializes in the design, manufacturing, sale and installation of wind turbines.
The collaboration is based on a cooperation between the Directorate of the Ministry of National Education’s GENIE Program, Preschool and Sports and LOOP for Science & Technology, an association that works for the integration of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) in education among young people and disadvantaged populations.
The educational partnership includes the “First Lego” program, which aims to prepare young Moroccans for jobs of the future with modern methods of collaborative learning and hands-on activities.
“The goal of this is to encourage and stimulate the creative potential of each student by guiding their understanding of programming, science and engineering through innovation and play,” stated the two companies in a joint press release.
Through the program, the two companies wish to introduce children from the ages of 4 to 16 to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
“We are very concerned about the lack of interest among young people in technical careers, despite the future opportunities they offer,” pointed out María Cortina, Global Director of the Social Commitment department at Siemens Gamesa.
For the 2021-2022 First Lego League competition, more than 39 teams of Moroccan students will be participating in activities designed to help them experiment and develop their critical thinking skills.
The competition, which runs from October 2021 to February 2022, is held under the theme “Cargo Connect,” a topic that aims to shift children’s thinking towards the future of transportation and innovation in the distribution field.
In recent years, Morocco has been working to improve its competitiveness in technological fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics.
In 2018, Morocco participated for the first time in the World Robot Olympiad which took place in Thailand.
“This milestone for Moroccan schools is part of Siemens Gamesa’s efforts to promote quality education and build the technical skills required to achieve sustainable development in Morocco,” said the press release.
