Rabat- Amid fears of the Omicron variant, the Moroccan government decided Wednesday to reduce the number of participants in funerals to a maximum of 10 people.
In a statement issued today, the government urges people to continue to respect the preventive and health measures, and calls on the unvaccinated and those concerned with the third dose to go to health centers to get vaccinated, in order to strengthen efforts and speed up the return to normal life.
Morocco recorded 171 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, raising the total of cases since the beginning of the outbreak to 950,088.
The kingdom has also reported 3 Covid related deaths in the past 24 hours.
The Moroccan government has extended the current Health State of Emergency until December 25.
Morocco has been extending the state of emergency since March 2020 as part of the country’s continued preventive campaign to combat the resurgence in COVID cases.
The state of emergency enables authorities to implement proactive acts depending on the national epidemiological situation.
Last week, Moroccan authorities announced that they are suspending all direct flights to the kingdom for two weeks, starting on Monday the 29th of November, citing fears of the Omicron variant.
Several countries took similar decisions, banning travel from countries with new COVID-19 variants.
While there is still no consensus over the effectiveness of the existing COVID-19 vaccines in the face of this contagious and “dangerous” variant, many health experts have said that Omicron is highly likely to weaken vaccine efficiency.
