Rabat – The United Kingdom welcomed, on December 8, Morocco’s efforts towards realizing a stable and peaceful Libya.

“The inter-Libyan dialogue held in Bouznika and Tangier contributed to the implementation of the agreement on the mechanisms of appointment to sovereign positions in Libya,” noted a statement issued at the conclusion of the Morocco-UK Strategic Dialogue’s third session.

The 2015 Skhirat Agreement, the roundtable talks that occurred in Tangier and Bouznika, as well as this year’s meeting in Rabat have shown that Morocco can play a crucial role in solving the crisis.

Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita, and Liz Truss, the British State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development, reaffirmed the importance of an inclusive and consultative electoral process that would be widely accepted by Libyan stakeholders.

Additionally, the two representatives stressed their commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Libya.

The statement recalled that UN Security Council Resolution 2570 emphasized, “the central role of the United Nations in facilitating an inclusive political process led by and for Libyans.” Nevertheless, the ministers recalled the need to put into perspective parallel efforts outside the auspices of the United Nations.

Bourita and Truss welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached on October 23, 2020, including the eventual withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya, as well as the action plan approved by the  5+5 joint military Council, the statement highlighted.

The two diplomats condemned the use of chemical weapons as a violation of international law, expressing their strong conviction that those responsible for the use of these weapons must be held accountable.

The ministers met in London on Wednesday as part of the third session of the UK-Morocco Strategic Dialogue.

The two representatives reaffirmed their countries’ shared vision for establishing a strategic bilateral partnership through strengthening political dialogue, deepening economic ties, security cooperation, and promoting human and cultural relations.

Earlier this week, the British State Secretary praised the reforms undertaken by Morocco to strengthen the country’s economy as well as the success of its vaccination campaign.
