Rabat – Tangier authorities incinerated nearly 24 tonnes of several types of drugs on December 30. The estimated market value of the confiscated drugs is MAD 250 million ($27 million).
According to reports, the incineration took place in Gueznaia near Tangier. Customs services, representatives from local authorities, civil protection services, and other representatives involved in the fight against drug trafficking took part in the operation.
The same source stressed that the seized drugs consist of 24.8 tonnes of cannabis resin, 444 packs of contraband cigarettes, 1.6 tonnes of hemp leaves, 1,290 grams of cocaine, and 37,847 psychotropic tablets.
Cannabis is one of Morocco’s most popular narcotics, and is a source of income for over 800,000 Moroccan families.
Authorities destroyed other illicit substances seized by security services in the northern cities during other operations, including 106 grams of heroin and 57.5 kilograms of hookah tobacco.
The operation is part of Morocco’s anti-drug-trafficking measures. Morocco’s security forces carried out similar operations against drug trafficking in recent weeks.
Last week, The Moroccan Royal Navy seized two tonnes of narcotics while patrolling in the Mediterranean off the coast of Nador, eastern Morocco.
The Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) and General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) disrupted an international drug trafficking attempt of three tonnes of cannabis resin in Agadir in the same week.
In 2020, Moroccan police recovered 217 tonnes and 323 kilograms of cannabis, an increase of 37 tonnes compared to 2019.
Approximately 97.564 people were arrested in 2020 for their involvement in drug trafficking affairs.
