Rabat – Domestic tourism is on the radar of Morocco’s Minister of Tourism Fatima Zahra Ammor, who unveiled findings of a study for encouraging Moroccans to travel domestically amid the COVID-19 crisis.
The minister said on Monday in the House of Representatives that the Tourism Ministry and the National Tourism Office (ONMT) carried out a joint study to identify requirements for attracting Moroccan customers with regards to the sector.
The study shed light on preferences of Moroccans in terms of niches, such as seaside, nature-based, historical and sporting tourism.
Ammor emphasized that the tourism ministry encourages investments in products that are highly demanded by Moroccan tourists. The ministry also called for the creation of tourist resorts affordable to locals.
Ammor said it is necessary to promote historical medinas and cultural activities, while creating attractive tourist circuits and improving sports-based tourism opportunities.
She recalled ONMT’s initiatives to promote local tourism. ONMT recently relaunched “Ntlakaw f’bladna” or “Let us meet in our country.” The campaign seeks to introduce Morocco’s tourism assets to locals and Moroccans abroad to revive the sector amid COVID-19 repercussions.
Ammor also announced that the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Economy and Finance are collaborating on holiday vouchers that will reduce travel costs as part of the country’s strategy to promote domestic tourism.
Last week, the Moroccan National Tourism Confederation released a statement acknowledging that the crisis in the sector prevails, particularly after Morocco decided to impose travel restrictions.
The confederation said the restrictions create obstacles for employees in the sector, notably including job losses.
It also called on the government to extend financial compensation measures for employees in the tourism sector.
