Rabat – As the world celebrates the UN World Language Day, international football association FIFA President Gianni Infantino will propose that Arabic becomes an official language of global football’s governing body.

FIFA’s official website announced the news on Saturday, saying that Infantino’s proposal “stems from long-term discussions with stakeholders in Satar and those across the MENA region, and coincides with the conclusion of the FIFA Arab Cub. ”

The statement emphasized that the decision is also in recognition of the importance of the Arabic language, which is spoken by 450 million people worldwide.

Currently, official languages in FIFA include English, French, German, and Spanish.

The announcement marked the UN Arabic Language day on Saturday, December 18. The date also marks the anniversary of the adoption of Arabic as the sixth official language  of the organization in 1973.

“In the diversity of its forms, classic, or dilactal, from oral expression to poetic calligraphy, the Arabic language has given rise to a fascinating aesthetic, in fields as varied as architecture, poetry, philosophy and song,” the UNESCO said in a statement commemorating the UN World Arabic Day.

The organization emphasized the importance of the language, stressing its importance in connecting people through culture, science, and many other fields.

“The Arabic language is a pillar of the cultural diversity of humanity,” it noted.
