Fez – The Long-term Europe-Africa Partnership on Renewable Energy (LEP-RE) program has selected 13 Moroccan projects to receive funds on renewable energies.
In terms of receiving LEP-PRE funding, Morocco ranked second along with France and South Africa, out of a group of 12 countries that make up the consortium.
In a statement, Morocco’s Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation announced it “has joined the consortium of the European project ‘LEAP-RE’ to launch a joint call for projects,” on December 8.
The ministry explained that the initiative aims “to strengthen scientific and technological cooperation in the field of renewable energy between the European Union and the African Union.”
The call intends to support collaborative research projects to provide innovative solutions to common problems related to the field of renewable energy. After the evaluation of 36 submitted projects d, 13 projects were selected for funding with a total budget of 10.4 million euros.
“With this result, Morocco is now ranked 2nd with France and South Africa, on a total of 12 countries in the consortium, in terms of research projects selected for funding, “said the Ministry.

Seven of these projects involve 12 Moroccan research teams, including 10 from the following universities: Mohammed Premier University – Oujda (3), Cadi Ayyad University – Marrakech (2), Mohammed 6 Polytechnic University of Bengrir (2), Mohammed V University – Rabat (1), Ibn Tofail University – Kenitra (1), and Rabat International University (1), as well as two teams from non-university research institutions.
The program is led by 83 partners from European and African countries, with a budget of around €32 million, of which Europe gives €15.
Morocco is making efforts to boost renewable energy investment and has attracted global renown for its efforts and large-scale projects.
British audit Ernst & Young published an October list of the top 40 nations with the most viable potential for sustainable energy investment and development. The ranking placed Morocco among the most attractive locations for renewable energy investment in the MENA region.
