Rabat – Yasser Mustafa Kamal Othman, Egypt’s ambassador to Morocco, has reaffirmed that his country does not recognize Polisario’s self-styled “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” (SADR).
Egypt does not establish any relationship with the Polisario Front and does not wish to see its position interpreted or questioned, the Egyptian diplomat said, stressing his country’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
The remarks came as Polisario and its main sponsor, Algeria, are looking for more international support for the front’s separatist claims over Western Sahara.
Othman’s statement notably came amid Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s visit to Egypt.
The Egyptian president arrived in Cairo today, where he was hosted by Egypt’s Abdel Fattah Al Sisi.
Algeria has been under the radar since reports pointed out that the North African country’s inability to host the next Arab League summit.
Initially scheduled for March, the summit has been postponed amid signs of Algeria’s frustration with the Arab League’s latest announcement on adopting an undivided map of Morocco.
Ahead of Tebboune’s Egyptian visit, some reports suggested that the Algerian president was planning to travel to Cairo in hopes of convincing Egypt to encourage Arab League members’ participation in the now postponed summit.
The Algerian regime feared further diplomatic isolation as the League’s adoption of an undivided Moroccan map suggested a pro-Morocco position on the Western Sahara question, the Arab Weekly quoted unnamed Algerian sources as saying ahead of Tebboune’s trip to Egypt.
Tebboune is concerned about his country’s image, the Arab Weekly reported, adding: “The source indicated that the Algerian president fears that Gulf representation will not be at a top level, which would give credence to reports about Algeria’s isolation amid meager diplomatic results.”
