Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports announced today that 3,287 COVID-related cases were recorded in Moroccan schools between January 24-29.
The number has slightly decreased compared to 5,802 cases recorded a week prior, noted the ministry.
According to the ministry’s weekly bulletin on the epidemiological situation in Moroccan schools, the number of schools that closed due to the health situation has also decreased.
In the past week, 159 schools closed their doors against 196 during the week between January 17 to 21.
So far, 389 classrooms have been closed nationwide, the ministry noted in a Facebook post.
The Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region recorded the highest number of infections among students (795 cases) with 22 schools closed; it was followed by Fez-Meknes (653 cases, 12 closed schools).
Meanwhile, the Rabat-Sale-Kenitra region recorded 575 cases among students and 100 closed schools, while Casablanca-Settat saw the closure of 12 schools and 244 cases.
The ministry detailed that 317 students were infected in Marrakech-Safi, and 219 in the Souss-Massa region.
Morocco’s southern provinces recorded the lowest COVID cases among students.
While one school closed in Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra due to the 42 detected cases, no school was closed in the regions of Guelmim-Oued Noun (80 cases) and Dakhla-Oued Eddahab (31 cases and one closed classroom).
Under the ministry’s protocol, when three or more cases are recorded in the same classroom within one week, it must opt for remote learning for a period of seven days.
In case of 10 or more COVID-related infections recorded in different classrooms within the same school, the ministry decides to close the school and approve distance learning for seven days.
