Information on the Military Service
Morocco reintroduced mandatory military conscription after the adoption of law 44-18 in January 2019.
The military service lasts for 12 months and targets 19 to 25 years old across the country.
Over the 12 months, the conscripts receive general and military training before proceeding to more advanced training at the Royal Armed Forces training centers. They can also obtain periodic and exceptional vacations.
The individuals asked to serve in the military can be exempted from the mandatory service under certain conditions discussed in law 44-18 such as physical or medical incapacity, family support, and studies.
If the individual refuses to serve after being invited by authorities or/and registered for the service, they will be subject to a jail sentence of up to one year and a fine of up to MAD 10,000 ($1,076).
While many Moroccans continue to criticize the reintroduction of mandatory military service, others believe that it will further strengthen youth people’s patriotism and reinforce values of solidarity and brotherhood.
