Rabat – Morocco ranked 55th out of 140 countries in terms of military power worldwide, according to the 2022 “Global Firepower” ranking. Last year, the kingdom was ranked 53rd.
The country’s PowerIndex (‘PwrIndx’) score is 0.8573 (a score of 0.0000 is considered ‘perfect’).
The PwrIndx evaluates several categories ranging from military might and financials to logistical capability and geography.
Regarding combat tank fleet strength by country, Morocco ranks 8th with 3,335 tanks.
The country also comes 30th with 144 rocket projectors, 29th with 3,500 armored vehicles, 16th with 517 self-propelled artillery units, and 44th with 211 pieces of towed artillery.
Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces has 325,000 soldiers, 200,000 of whom are in active military service, 100,000 reserve soldiers and 25,000 in the paramilitary forces, according to Global Firepower.
The Moroccan Air Force is composed of 249 military aircraft, including 83 interceptor aircraft, 64 helicopters and 29 transport aircraft. The Royal Navy has 121 military ships including one corvette, 6 frigates, and 22 patrol vessels.
Morocco buys 90% of its weapons from the United States, 9.2% from France and 0.3% from the United Kingdom, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
The USA tops the global firepower list, followed by Russia and China, while India ranks 4th, Japan 5th, Republic of Korea 6th and France 7th.
The UK, Pakistan, and Brazil ranks 8th, 9th, and 10th, respectively. Italy comes in 11th ahead of Egypt and Turkey.
The top 13 countries all increased their military capabilities between 2021 and 2022, Global Firepower reports.
In Africa, Egypt ranks first (12th worldwide), followed by Algeria (31st), Nigeria (35th), and Morocco (55th).
Morocco is ranked after Uzbekistan and ahead of Hungary.
Meanwhile Libya ranks 72th, Tunisia 74th, and Mauritania 125th.
In the Gulf region, Saudi Arabia comes 20th globally, the UAE in 36th place, followed by Bahrain 38th, Kuwait 71st, Qatar 77th, and Oman 78th.
Germany comes 16th in the world ahead of Australia and Israel, followed by Spain at the 19th spot.
Since 2006, Global Firepower (GFP) has been conducting research and analyzing data from 140 countries. The ranking is based on each nation’s potential war-making capability across land, sea, and air fought by conventional means.
The analysis takes into account equipment, natural resources, manpower, finances, and geography, represented by 50+ individual factors used in formulating the finalized GFP ranks.
