Rabat – Morocco’s head of government Aziz Akhannouch announced the government’s decision to accelerate the officialization of the Amazigh language.

On the occasion of the Amazigh New Year 2972, Morocco is renewing its commitment to law 26-16 on the integration of the Amazigh language into teaching and various public life sectors.

Akhannouch confirmed in the government’s council meeting that a budget of MAD 200 million ($21.74 million) from the state budget was set for the officialization of the Amazigh language. The government plans to establish a special fund financed by the state budget. The fund’s goal is to reach MAD 1 billion ($108 million) by 2025.

“The government will pursue, with determination, the concretization of its commitments throughout its mandate, in order to achieve the constitutional objectives, the royal will, and the aspirations of the people linked to this ambitious national project,” Akhannouch stated.

He added: “Since his accession to the throne, King Mohammed VI has given the Amazigh language and culture the place they deserve in the building of national identity.”

The permanent inter-ministerial commission established under article 34 of law n°26-16 will soon meet to monitor and review “the implementation of the official character of the Tamazight language.”

In April 2021, the permanent inter-ministerial commission approved an “integrated government plan for the implementation of the official character of the Tamazight language,” stated Morocco’s state media (MAP).

In January 2021, Morocco’s Ministry of National Education announced a curriculum draft to teach the Amazigh language in elementary schools.
