Rabat – Both chambers of Morocco’s parliament signed today a cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on training and education in the field of parliamentary diplomacy.
The agreement will see cooperation between the two parties in the field of diplomatic training, including holding training courses, conferences, and other collaborative events.
It signifies a new stage of cooperation which is expected to boost national diplomatic performance and strengthen Morocco’s position regionally and internationally, said Al Naam Miyara, Speaker of the House of Councilors, the upper chamber of the parliament.
The partnership will target improving the diplomatic knowledge and abilities of Moroccan parliament members to enable them to work in an increasingly complex international landscape, he added.
Strengthening Moroccan diplomacy has been a focus of the new parliament since the start of the autumn session, according to Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
“The academy has trained about 600 diplomats for the Ministry of foreign affairs, and about 200 foreign diplomats,” Bourita said. He stressed that if the academy can train foreign diplomats, it should also be able to work towards training new Moroccan cadres.
The agreement should strengthen parliamentary performance when it comes to defending Morocco’s utmost national interests, especially the issue of Morocco’s territorial integrity, said Rachid Taleb, Speaker of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the parliament.
The agreement is the first in a line of planned cooperative projects between the two parties.
Morocco has been recently showing a strong foreign policy, between the diplomatic gains that the kingdom has secured in the Western Sahara dispute, and its growing influence as an emerging regional power in Africa.
The academy, which was started almost 14 years ago, specializes in training diplomats, both Moroccan and foreign, and is operated under the umbrella of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
