Rabat – Algeria President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that tensions between his country and Morocco have worsened in recent months. not changed since the beginning of the crisis.
Tebboune made his statement on Tuesday, renewing unproven claims that, since the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel in December 2020, the two countries have been supporting “ a propaganda and fake news” campaign to destabilize Algeria.
“Nothing changed, but on the contrary, things got worse,” President Tebboune said.
The Algerian President made his hostile remarks as Algeria’s state media continues to spread fabricated news about Morocco, including allegations published by pro-Polisario websites.
APS, Algeria’s official press agency, has put in place a whole section dedicated to the Western Sahara conflict. In its reports about the conflict, the Algerian agency mostly promotes misleading news about an “ongoing” or “raging” war in the region.
Tebboune’s statement also comes amid remarks from Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita on Morocco’s attachment to regional stability and peace despite signs of Algiers adopting a rigidly hostile and bellicose attitude regarding relations with Rabat.
Morocco’s approach was “not to follow a logic of escalation,” said this week in an interview with Africa24. “Morocco did not take a position against Algerian, it was Algeria that took positions and Morocco does not follow this logic.”
He argued that the Moroccan government has not reacted to hostile statements Algeria has constantly made in recent months, because “Morocco wishes to build the future and not to work to destroy what binds the two brotherly people.”
In August 2021, Algeria severed relations with Morocco and blamed Rabat for the wildfires in the Kabylia region.
In response, Morocco’s Foreign Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that it regrets “the completely unjustified” decision of Algeria to break off diplomatic relations.
Rejecting allegations against Morocco, the ministry emphasized that it will always be a credible partner and ally for the Algerian people despite political divergences with their government.
Algeria’s announcement to break off ties with Morocco came just a few days after Rabat had offered to send two firefighting jets to assist Algerian authorities in putting out the wildfires that were ravaging the Kabylia region.
