Ukraine has severed its diplomatic relations with Russia after Moscow’s military offensive on Thursday, February 24.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the news on Thursday, vowing that his country is fighting back.
“We broke off diplomatic relations with Russia,” he said.
He added that Russian attacks have killed over 40 Ukrainian soldiers.
The attacks also claimed the lives of 10 civilians.
The ongoing Russian military offensive followed Putin’s order to allow a “special military operation” within the borders of its Western neighbor Ukraine.
Ukraine confirmed Russia’s military invasion across several regions in the country.
The international community responded to the Russian escalation, condemning the “unjustified” attacks.
The US has signaled it will support Ukraine, while many organizations and countries denounced Moscow’s actions.
The EU and other world organizations vowed “unprecedented sanctions” against Russia.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called Russia’s invasion a “barbaric attack”
The EU official said such an action targeted the “stability in Europe and the whole of the international peace order.”
In response, Putin warned countries not to interfere with Russia’s offensive.
The Russian president justified his action, claiming that the operation aims to protect people of Russian origin in eastern Ukraine.
He also accused the US and allies of ignoring Russia’s demand to “prevent Ukraine from joining NATO and for security guarantees.”
