Rabat – Transavia, the low-cost airline of the Air France-KLM Group, has recorded a bookings “explosion” after Morocco reopened its air borders.

Transavia’s commercial deputy general manager Nicholas Henin told Le Figaro that Morocco’s decision to reopen its airspace for international travel had an “immediate effect” on flight bookings to the North African country.

“[Bookings] exploded. Flights were added from opening day. We knew that there was a wait-and-see attitude,” he said.

The Transavia official emphasized that the company received between 400 and 500 daily bookings to Morocco in January.

“Since the announcement, we have counted between 4,000 and 5,000. By this summer, we will have 40% more seats compared to 2019, which is our pre-pandemic reference year,” he said.

Transavia is scheduling two new destinations for April, including Oujda and Fez, which will connect Nantes Atlantique airport to Morocco.

Marrakech tops the list of destinations travelers book flights for.

“From February holidays, two daily flights will be available to this destination, and four will be from this summer,” Henin said.

Marrakech is the “biggest destination for us. Agadir, a traditional destination, is also doing very well. Then follow Casablanca and Essaouira,” he added.

Transavia is also expecting travel demand to Morocco will accelerate.

“We feel that Morocco is doing everything to make this tourist season a full season. Except for the last twist due to the pandemic, all the conditions are in place to have a great summer,” Henin added.

Morocco reopened its borders to air travel on February 6 after a few months of closure. Transavia, among several other local and international airlines, announced the resumption of flights immediately after the reopening.
