Mahmoud Abbas Highlights Historic ‘Special Ties’ Between Morocco and Palestine

Rabat – Palestine’s President Mahmoud Abbas highlighted the historical role of Morocco in serving “the Palestinian cause and issues of peace in the world” in a meeting with the newly appointed Moroccan Ambassador to Palestine Abderrahim Meziane in Ramallah.

Mahmoud Abbas, on January 9, received the credentials of the Moroccan ambassador. During the reception, Abbas emphasized the historical relations between the Moroccan and Palestinian peoples, noting that many Palestinian families in Jerusalem and across Palestine originate from Morocco.

The Palestinian President also praised the “special ties” that bond him to King Mohammed VI, wishing him “good health and long life”.

Additionally, Abbas stressed the role of the late kings Mohammed V and Hassan II in advancing the Palestinian cause. He commented on King Mohammed V’s protection of Jews against the Nazi-controlled Vichy regime and the pioneering role of King Hassan II in supporting the Palestinian cause.

In light of the tragic death of 5-year-old Rayan, Abu Mazen expressed his “deepest condolences” and praised the efforts of Moroccan rescue teams.

The Moroccan ambassador reiterated the firm position of  Morocco on the Palestinian conflict, reporting the King’s support for the Palestinian people and their steadfastness through the activities of Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency.

In a meeting with Ambassador Meziane on February 8, Palestine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Riyad Al-Malki praised the relations between Morocco and Palestine that are reflected in the operations of the Al-Quds Committee and the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Acharif Agency.

Founded by King Hassan II, Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency focuses on socio-economic development at Al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the preservation of local Islamic cultural heritage.

On January 26, the agency ratified $1 million funds for social development in Al-Quds as part of its 2022 strategy. The goal is to double the capacity to take in orphans under the custody of the agency, support needy families, promote academic research in media, and finance local initiatives for the Al-Quds development program.

Since the signing of the Abraham Accords between Morocco, the United States, and Israel in December 2020, some Moroccans and Arabs have considered the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel a “betrayal” to the Palestinian cause.

Yet, Moroccan leadership has continuously reiterated its support for the Palestinian cause and the two-state solution, noting that the two-state solution requires the recognition of both states, Palestine and Israel.
