Rabat- Rain has finally fallen in many Moroccan provinces after worrying signs of upcoming drought for the country.
The General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) forecasts rain in several regions across Morocco on Friday and Saturday.
The DMN states that 12 millimeters (0.47 inches) of rain is expected to fall in Ifrane, and 11 millimeters (0.4 inches) of rain are expected in Settat.
Fez and Taza are expected to witness 7 millimeters (0.27 inches) of rain.
Chefchaouen, El Jadida, and Essaouira are expecting 6 millimeters (0. 23 inches) of rain.
The DMN forecasts 4 to 5 millimeters of rain across Nouaceur, Meknes, Tetouan, Tangier, Casablanca, Khouribga, and Tit Mellil.
Additionally, 3 millimeters (0.11 inches) of rain are forecast for Rabat-Sale, whereas 2 millimeters (0.07 inches) are forecast for Al Hoceima, Larache, Mohammedia, and Rabat (city),
Nador and Essaouira (port) are expecting 1 millimeter (0.03 inches) of rain.
Kenitra, Ouarzazate, Agadir-Inzegane, Sidi Ifni, Taroudant, and Benguerir are forecast to receive less than one millimeter of rain.
The delays in much-needed rainfall in Morocco have impacted the country’s economy and agriculture by altering the availability of water throughout the year.
The Moroccan economy heavily depends on rainfall, as insufficiently-irrigated agriculture represents more than 10% of Morocco’s GDP and employs more than 30% of the workforce.
Climate expert Ali Shroud explained that “Morocco is witnessing a worrisome change in the weather and an unprecedented dry season in 20 years”.
In order to mitigate the immediate impact of rain shortage, Morocco launched a MAD 10 billion ($billion) program.
The budget will be allocated to assist affected farmers, restructure their debts, and finance various affected agriculture activities
