Rabat – NGO Islamic Relief has announced that April 2 is set to be the first day of Ramadan 2022 in the Netherlands.
The organization said that the holy month is expected to last from April 2 to May 2, based on the calculations of the Turkish Bureau for Religious Affairs in the Netherlands.
Islamic Relief’s announcement echoes the statement of the General Secretariat of the European Council for Fatwa and Research that also noted April 2 as the first day of Ramadan.
The council reached the exact date through “accurate astronomical calculations for the crescent of the month Ramadan.”
International Muslim councils throughout the world have predicted that this year’s holy month will fall on April 2 including the Muslim Theological Council of France and Islamic Relief Canada.
In Morocco, astronomers have forecasted the first day of Ramadan to be on April 3, a day after the aforementioned European countries.

The one day-delay is common, as some European countries, as well as the US, Canada, and some Gulf countries will start fasting a day earlier than Morocco. Yet all countries tend to fast for the same period of time.
Ramadan refers to the ninth month of the twelve-month Islamic calendar.
Throughout the month, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking, as well as fight temptation from dawn (fajr) to sunset (iftar). They also dedicate their time during the holy month to fasting, prayer, and self-reflection.
After the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid Al-Fitr, the holiday marking the first day of returning to a normal eating schedule. The day is marked by family gatherings and delicious meals.
