Rabat – The USA’s ambassador to Spain, Julissa Reynoso Pantaleon, has reiterated her country’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, describing Morocco’s autonomy plan as “reasonable and viable.”
The ambassador made the remark during an appearance on Cadena SER, a Spanish radio station.
“The United States considers that the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara is reasonable and viable,” she said. “The US advocates for this solution when meeting with parties involved in the conflict.”
The former advisor to US President Joe Biden also voiced support for the UN-led process. “We support the UN-led process to resolve the dispute and support Morocco’s initiative,” she said.
On Friday, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez officially announced his country’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan. Sanchez described the Moroccan autonomy initiative as “the most serious, realistic, and credible basis for resolving the dispute.”
The announcement was a landmark decision in the history of the dispute, driving Polisario and its supporters into further isolation.
The US also made its position on the dispute more official recently with the latest spending bill, with provisions under title III – usually reserved for funding towards “Western Sahara” – clearly suggesting that Washington now considers the region as an integral part of Morocco.
