Rabat – The US has condemned Iran’s missile attack on Erbil, Iraq, saying it “stands behind” Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq amid Iran’s violation of Iraqi territorial integrity.
“This attack targeted a civilian residence in Erbil, the Kurdistan Region’s capital city, without any justification,” said Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor.
Conveying Washington’s support to all their partners in the Middle East to confront similar threats from Iran, Sullivan stressed in a statement that the US will “support the government of Iraq in holding Iran accountable.”
Iran’s missile attack happened early on Sunday, March 13, near a sprawling US consulate complex in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for the attack, stressing that they launched the missile “against an Israeli strategic center of conspiracy” in Erbil. No injuries were reported.
There were no reports on how many missiles were fired but the Guardian quoted a US defense official as saying there was no damage at any UG government facilities.
“Any repetition of any kinds of atrocities will be met with a harsh, decisive and destructive response,” Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said.
Following the attack, Jake Sullivan highlighted, “The US stands behind the full sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Iraq.”
In a phone call on Sunday, Iraq’s prime minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi and the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed “Kurdish unity and the need to form a government that protects Iraqis and their territory,” Blinken tweeted.
Al-Kadhimi also took to Twitter to speak on Iran’s attack, noting, “The aggression which targeted the dear city of Erbil and spread fear amongst its inhabitants is an attack on the security of our people.”
