Rabat – The Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino) ratified the declaration naming Rabat the new “capital of south-south cooperation.”
The announcement came after the Parlatino had adopted the content of the Final Declaration of the Parliamentary Dialogue Forum of the Senates and Equivalent Councils of Africa, the Arab World, Latin America, and the Caribbean that was held by Morocco’s House of Councillors on March 4-5.
The official ratification took place after the League of Arab States welcomed on March 9 the Forum’s proclamation of Rabat as the “capital of South-South cooperation.” The adoption was confirmed through a letter sent by Parlatino President Silvia del Rosario Giacoppo to the Moroccan Speaker of the House of Councilors Naama Mayara.
In her letter, the Senator of Argentina expressed her appreciation of King Mohammed VI, wishing more progress and prosperity to the Moroccan people.
Silvia del Rosario Giacoppo, who was elected as Parlatino president in February 2022, reiterated that the Forum is an unprecedented initiative by which Morocco’s House of Councilors brought together three geopolitical groups around common commitments expressed in the final declaration.
The Senator from Argentina also affirmed that Parlatino considers itself a part of the common commitment, while welcoming the forum’s talks on health, environmental, and social challenges to further strengthen cooperation and trade between Africa, Arab world, Latin America and the Caribbean.
That said, Parlatino’s representative expressed willingness to implement a “parliamentary mechanism for cooperation and economic integration” through a roadmap aimed at boosting parliamentary cooperation, and meetings between Afro-Arab-Latin American governmental bodies and unions.
Rosario Giacoppo also reaffirmed her commitment to the “Panama Declaration” on strengthening Afro-Latin American parliamentary cooperation resulting from the “Afrolac” forum.
Last month, a Moroccan space was inaugurated at the headquarters of Parlatino in the Republic of Panama.
During the inauguration ceremony, Naama Mayara stressed that the “King Mohammed VI Library” space testifies to the diversity of Morocco’s culture and heritage, showcased in the largest parliamentary gathering in the Latin American and Caribbean region.
