Rabat – Algerian parliamentarian Fawzi Benamar condemned the lack of actions taken by the Algerian regime to tackle the socio-economic crisis in Algeria.
Benamar, a member of the National Democratic Rally (RND) pointed fingers at the regime, highlighting its complacency and apparent unwillingness to address the ongoing economic crisis and urgent needs of Algerian people, who continue to lose purchasing power amid soaring prices.
During a parliamentary session on Monday, the politician slammed MPs for failing even to attend parliamentary sessions, calling it a “shame.”
“I should address the deputies before anyone else. We are representing the people. If the government is too busy defending its own interests, who will represent the people? All of the [parliament] seats are empty, this is shameful,” he said.
He bravely acknowledged that many would not appreciate his remarks.
Continuing regardless of this risk, Benamar went on to focus on the plight of farming communities in western Algeria and called on the Algerian Minister of Agriculture to visit the western region himself to see first-hand the poor conditions in which farmers and local people currently live.
“People are suffering,” he said, condemning soaring prices of farming seeds and other essential agricultural resources.
“I am calling on the President of the Republic to dismiss those ministers who are failing to fulfill their duty,” he said.
The politician also called for the Algerian regime to stop wasting time generating and circulating propaganda during elections.
“We have done nothing but take pictures. No achievements at all,” he said.
He emphasised that the crisis not only affects farmers, but has an impact on all citizens due to shortages of basic foodstuffs such as cooking oil.
“Cooking oil is not found in Maghnia [in Tlemcen],” he said.
Addressing ministers, the Algerian politician said: “Fear your God and help people. You made everyone scared, including farmers, investors, and traders.”
Benamar’s speech earnt loud applause from MPs in attendance at Monday’s parliamentary session.
