Rabat – Morocco and Canada will organize a joint event to discuss the dynamic role of the North African country in advancing sustainable development in Africa with a focus on water governance practices.
“To celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Canada, @uOttawa in collaboration with @MoroccoOttawa [embassy] are organizing a scientific day on Tuesday, May 10, 2022,” the University of Ottawa (uOttawa) tweeted on Friday.
The event further stresses the crucial role of universities in developing and disseminating knowledge through open dialogue and critical thinking.
The virtual event will be held in French and marked with the presence of Morocco’s Ambassador in Ottawa Souriya Otmani and Canadian Ambassador to Morocco and Mauritania Nell Stewart.

Moroccan and Canadian researchers and officials will join the two countries’ diplomats in marking another moment of their improved bilateral relations. The guest list includes Director of the Moroccan Academy of Diplomatic Studies Mohammed Hicham Bensoltane, President of uOttawa Jacques Fremont, Director of The Center for Governance Studies at uOttawa Eric Champagne, and Professor at UM6P and uOttawa Abdelaziz Beljadid.
As Morocco and Canada celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations, the two countries are set to organize joint events to enhance economic, political, and cultural exchanges.
Recently water management has been the focus of Morocco’s sustainable development and agriculture-related policies. Earlier this year, the country recorded the worst drought in 30 years, leading to a sharp drop in the country’s agricultural output.
The implications of the war in Ukraine in global fuel, gas, and wheat markets have also directly threatened Morocco’s food security, leading to the public uproar about the surge in prices of daily-used products such as cooking oil.
Aware of increasing water scarcity, Morocco has adopted an emergency plan to secure its drinking water supply, opted for rationalization in certain regions, and called for sharing and preservation of water resources at the regional and continental levels.
