Rabat – The Australian Fatwa Council has declared that local moon observations confirm that Eid Al Fitr 2022 will take place on Monday May 2 in Australia.
In a statement published by the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), the Australian Fatwa Council “confirmed that the new moon of the Month of Shawwal will be born on Sunday 1st of May at 6.28am AEST, the sun sets on the same day at 5.14pm while the new moon will appear on the same day after sunset for 14 minutes until 5.28pm where it will disappear thereafter from the horizon.”
The size of the Australia continent means that times vary, with Perth in Western Australia facing a roughly 30-minute delay.
The ANIC added, “The Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, and the respected Imams of the Australian National Imams Council, wish the Muslim community a happy, joyful and blessed Eid Al-Fitr.”
The official confirmation of the start date for Eid Al Fitr matched expectations, as earlier predictions had estimated Monday May 2 to be the date for the religious festival.
Islam in Australia is still a relatively small minority, making up roughly 2.6% of the country’s population. The local Muslim community is growing rapidly however, increasing by 18% between 2016 and 2011.
Over a third of Australian Muslims are born in the country, as the Australian Muslim community is marked by diversity, with Lebanese and Turkish Muslims forming the second and third largest sub-sections of Australian Muslims.
