Rabat – Astronomy forecasts predict that Turkey will see Eid Al Fitr on May 2, much like other countries in the region.
Most countries that celebrated the first day of Ramadan on April 2, including Turkey, will celebrate Eid on the second of May, as indicated by forecasts from several astronomy centers.
Eid Al Fitr is the first day of Shawwal, the month that comes right after Ramadan. It is significant as it marks the end of the compulsory Ramadan fast.
Muslims around the world celebrate the day by cleansing themselves, buying new clothes, and attending communal prayers in the morning.
While initial expectations were for the official administrative holiday to extend 9 days, recent reports indicate that the break could be as short as four days, between May 1 and May 4.
There has still been no official confirmation on how long the break will be.
Eid celebrations in Turkey are marked by sweet food. In the Ottoman period, trays of sweets and sugary foods were sent to soldiers after the first 15 days of Ramadan, and the tradition of consuming sweet food has stuck ever since.
The month of Ramadan is the most holy for Muslims throughout the year, with it being treated as a time for generosity, worship, and compassion.
