Eid Al-Fitr is the first of two official religious holidays observed throughout the Islamic world. Muslims participate in special morning prayers during Eid al-Fitr, greet each other with formal embraces, and exchange greetings of “Eid Mubarak,” or “Have a blessed Eid.”
Eid Al-Fitr is also an opportunity for families and friends to gather and celebrate with food and drink, exchange gifts, and dress up in new clothes.
The Islamic Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar in which months pass according to the phases of the moon. Each month lasts a full lunar cycle, which is the period of time between one new moon and the next. This moon cycle includes all the moon’s phases. The beginning of each month is marked by the sighting of the last phase of the moon cycle, which is the waning crescent.
