Police Arrest Three in Agadir For Obtaining, Distributing Sickles

Rabat – Police on Monday arrested three people in Agadir suspected of possessing sickles with the intention of committing felonies and harming people.

The suspects include a taxi driver and two students enrolled at Ibn Zohr University in Agadir. The arrest took place near the university dorm where the taxi driver delivered 23 sickles to the two students in a plastic bag.

Members of the anti-gang squad at Morocco’s National Brigade of Judicial Police (BNPJ)arrested the three individuals in coordination with the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN),  reported Morocco’s news outlet 2M.

The traditionally-made sickles are subject to investigation as the early investigation is linking them to a blacksmith in Ouled Taima village, added the outlet.

The Prosecutor’s office has ordered the investigation of the three suspects to unveil more details on the making of sickles and potential suspects or masterminds.

Sickels are large curved blades, typically used to harvest crops in farming.

On Saturday, Moroccan security forces also arrested a man in an “abnormal state” for endangering the safety of customers in a restaurant in Taghazout near Agadir. The individual further attacked a member of the auxiliary forces, leaving him with serious injuries.

The suspect was admitted twice to a psychiatric hospital before the arrest. Earlier this year, a similar case took place in Tiznit when a mentally ill individual murdered a French tourist

Despite these cases, Morocco remains one of the safest countries in the world with terrorism having a “very low” impact on the country.

The country has deployed strong counter-terrorism and other security measures at national and international levels to address any rising threats to the security and Moroccan nationals and tourists.
