Rabat – Police in Tiflet, a small town 64km from Rabat, arrested on April 13 two individuals – aged 28 and 33 – suspected of intentionally attempting to murder a baby.
The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said on Wednesday that police were notified of a social media post with a picture of a baby who is barely one month old, covered with bruises on its face.
The police opened an investigation to identify the causes of the incident.
Through the investigation, police found out that the baby was admitted in critical condition to the Children’s Hospital in Rabat, following his brutal beating, after his mother abandoned him at the home of one of the defendants, the alleged perpetrator of the attack.
During the arrest, the two perpetrators resisted the police and threatened to explode a gas cylinder to prevent the arrest operation, the statement added.
They were later taken into custody for further investigation by the prosecutor’s office.
The security services are still monitoring the baby’s state of health while collecting the testimony of his mother as well.
Article 485 of Morocco’s penal code punishes any suspect involved in “a [violent] crime was committed against a child or someone under the age of eighteen, an incapacitated person, a handicapped person, or a person known for his weak mental capacities” with a prison sentence of 10 to 20 years.
In 2020, a couple from Tangier was sentenced to death the penalty for their involvement in the murder of a seven year old child.
Investigations began when police found some parts of the child’s body in a landfill site and search operations led to the discovery of the rest of the victim’s body in the fridge at his family’s house.
Morocco, however, has not carried out the death penalty since 1993.
