Rabat – The Ministry of Equipment and Water reported on Monday that the amount of water in the reservoirs of Morocco’s main dams has reached more than 5.52 billion cubic meters.
The ministry said the number represents a filling rate of 34.3%, meaning that the reservoir that helps fill the dam is nearly 35% full.
The statement from the ministry acknowledged that this year’s filling rate has declined compared to the same period last year.
Dam reserves accumulated more than 8.19 billion cubic meters during the same period in 2021. The number represented a filling rate of 50.8%.
The ministry said that the Al Wahda dam is the largest reservoir with a volume reaching over 2.03 billion cubic meters and a filling rate of 57.7%, against 74.5% a year earlier.
The Idriss 1st dam is second on the list with a reservoir capable of holding 508.6 million cubic meters of water, and a 45% filling rate against 79% in 2021.
Oued El Makhazine dam ranked third with 458.5 million cubic meters.
Despite the substantial differences, the Moroccan government is satisfied with the recent rainfalls that contributed to the filling rate of Morocco’s dams.
The rainfalls followed months of drought and a lack of downpours, causing concern among the government and farmers.
Last week, Morocco’s government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said the rainfall will contribute to the recovery of the agriculture sector.
He said that the harvest of tree products will be in good shape.
However, grain crop yields are expected to decline compared to 2021.
