Morocco to Add 1.8 GW of Wind Power by 2026

Rabat – Morocco could increase wind energy production by 1.8 GigaWatt (GW) in 2026, according to the Global Wind Energy Council, enough to power more than 1.3 million homes.

Data from the report indicates that Morocco is well on its way to reaching its national target of producing an additional 1GW of wind energy by 2024.

Africa is set to produce an additional 14 GW in wind energy by 2026, according to the GWEC report. The biggest contributors could be South Africa with an additional 5.4GW of wind energy, Egypt with an additional 2.2 GW, and Morocco with an additional (1.8 GW).

Morocco’s geography offers it significant potential in terms of wind energy capacity.

With a strong wind speed averaging 7.5-9.5 meters a second (m/s) in the south, and 9.5-11 m/s in the north, wind power is one of Morocco’s most promising sources of renewable energy, according to Wind Energy, a renewable energy-focused data platform.

Morocco’s coastline stretching over 3,000 kilometers of coastline is also significant in aiding the country’s ambitions for a green energy transition.

In March, the country made it to the list of top 30 countries with significant potential for offshore wind energy, according to GWEC.

The country’s thriving offshore wind energy market has put it on the map with the potential to emerge as a global leader in the offshore wind energy market.

On the continental level, Morocco ranked first in terms of offshore wind production capacity followed by South Africa, Tunisia, Egypt, and Kenya, GWEC data said.

Morocco boasts “significant resources and a government committed to renewable growth,” the global institution said in a report.

On the list of 30 countries leading the global offshore wind energy, Morocco comes in 12th place globally and 1st in the MENA and Africa regions, GWEC said.
