Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) has forecasted heavy rainfall in several provinces from Sunday to Tuesday in several provinces across the country.
The weather office also expects stormy downpours, strong winds, and snowfall.
DMN expects heavy rains ranging between 25 and 40 millimeters from Monday 4 a.m. to 8 p.m in the provinces of Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, Inezgane-Aït Melloul, Chtouka-Aït Baha, Safi, Al Haouz, Essaouira, Azilal and Beni Mellal.
From Monday at 6 a.m. to Tuesday at 6 p.m., rainfall ranging between 40 to 70 millimeters will hit the provinces of M’diq-Fnideq, Fahs-Anjra, Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Al Hoceima, Nador and Driouch in northern Morocco.
Meanwhile, snowfalls ranging from 20- 35 centimeters above 1800 meters are expected, from Monday to Tuesday, in the provinces of Azilal, Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Midelt, Ouarzazate, and Taroudant.
Strong winds of 75-95 kilometers per hour are expected from Sunday to Monday in the provinces of Fahs-Anjra, Tangier-Asilah, Tetouan, and M’diq-Fnideq.
Strong wind is also expected in the provinces of Figuig, Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Errachidia and Zagora on Monday.
Morocco has experienced a sustained period of heavy rainfall over the past few weeks, which the government has described as beneficial for the country’s agriculture season.
Like many other countries across the world, Morocco recently experienced the dire impact of a severe drought, with the lack of rainfall affecting the national agriculture sector — one of the pillars of Morocco’s economy.
Earlier this week, Morocco’s Agriculture Minister Mohamed Sadiki said the recent rainfall had an “immediate impact” on agriculture, especially the production of cereals.
“We are almost on a million hectares of cereals which can experience an extremely significant catch-up,” the minister said, emphasizing the amount of the crop that could be saved by the recent rainfall.
