Rabat – France expects the first day of the holy month of Ramadan to be on April 2, according to the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM).
In a statement, the CFCM called for the Muslim community in France “to seize the opportunity of this holy month to raise prayers for prosperity and peace in the world.”
The Great Mosque of Paris is set to hold a meeting on Friday evening with representatives from the CFCM to search for the crescent moon. If observed, Ramadan will begin on Saturday April 2.
The General Secretariat of the European Council for Fatwa and Research has also said April 2 will correspond to the first day of Ramadan 2022.
Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have now confirmed Saturday April 2, as the first day of Ramadan.
Other countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore will celebrate the first day of Ramadan on Sunday April 3.
The holy month is among Islam’s five pillars and is considered a period where Muslims need to increase their good deeds, including charity and self-accountability, among others.
During Ramadan, muslims abstain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset. People with prescribed medication and children are exempt from fasting.
Morocco announced that the sighting of the crescent moon of Ramadan will take place on April 1 and several Moroccan astronomers expect that the holy month of Ramadan will start on Sunday, April 3 in the North African country.
