Rabat – April 2, Saturday marks the beginning of the 2022 Ramadan month in the US and Canada. May will mark the end of the holy month in North America.
Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. Over two billion Muslims worldwide celebrate the month.
During Ramadan, Muslim communities around the world fast from sunrise to sunset in an act of veneration.
The whole month of Ramadan is characterized by a special intensive praying session “Taraweeh” following the fifth and last night-time prayers Salat Al Ishaa.
Ramadan-related traditions and customs change from one Muslim community to another, but all communities seize the occasion to celebrate family and community bonds. Goodwill and charity tend to spike over the holy month.
After two years of reinforced social distancing measures, the 2022 Ramdan comes bearing joy for the US Muslim community and other communities around the world, as worshipers can finally gather in public mosques and public praying spaces to perform the Taraweeh prayers collectively.
COVID social distancing measures in the last two years meant that Muslim communities could not get together to share the sunset meal “iftar.”
The end of Ramadan is of significant religious value to Muslim communities as it marks Eid Al Fitr.
Eid Al Fitr festivities equally take multiple forms that vary depending on the culture and country. Most Muslim communities celebrate the day through special food and family visits and reunions.
On Eid Al Fitr day, Muslim perform special Eid-specific prayers that can only be performed collectively.
After two years of the fight to get ahead of the COVID-19 curb, Muslim communities in the US and elsewhere can finally rejoice in religious occasions in close to pre-pandemic conditions.
