Rabat – Diesel prices on Thursday, March 31 surpassed that of gasoline, for the first time ever in Morocco, media has reported.

As of Thursday, 9:25 PM, the price of a liter of diesel in Casablanca stood at MAD 14.31 ($1.48), while gasoline reached MAD 14.20 ($1.47) per liter.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war is having a continued impact on global oil and gas prices as global supply lines face severe disruptions and uncertainty.

The price of fuel earlier that day was already high.

The price of diesel stood at MAD 14.30 ($1.48) and gasoline at MAD 14.16 ($1.46), according to Le360 online newspaper.

Fuel prices have been gradually rising since Russia invaded Ukraine on Thursday, February 24, causing the two countries to significantly reduce their oil exports amid ever expanding Western sanctions and disruptions of traditional supply agreements.

Morocco’s Association of Transport and Logistics (AMTL) announced in February that they will increase taxi fares by 20%. It announced this decision before the fuel prices spike related to the Ukraine crisis.

Morocco’s National Federation of Gas Stations’ Owners, Salesmen, and Managers called for support from the government in dealing with the rising price of fuel in a press release on Monday, March 28.

Diesel based engines are traditionally considered to be better for long trips, while gasoline based engines are seen as a better option for people that only drive in cities.
