Rabat – In a bizarre incident, a sheep in South Soudan was convicted of the murder of a woman and is set to serve a three-year prison sentence.
Last week, the sheep allegedly attacked Adhieu Chaping, a 45-year-old woman, in “a place called Akuel Yol” in South Soudan’s Rumbek East County, according to converging news reports.
Adhieu Chaping died of her injuries after being repeatedly attacked by the sheep, media reports indicate.
Official sources said on Sudanese national radio that the woman sustained severe injuries to her ribs resulting from the attack, causing her to die immediately.
Speaking to South Sudan’s Eye Radio station, Elijah Mabor Makuach, a spokesperson for the police, said that the sheep was apprehended and is currently being kept under police custody. “Our role as police is to provide safety and separate fights,” the spokesperson added.
Meanwhile, the police have relieved the owner of the sheep from any legal liabilities, saying he is innocent of the “guilty” sheep’s misdeeds.
The police report emphasizes that the sheep deserved to be arrested given the strong evidence linking it to the death of the woman.
Local news reports have also pointed out that the case is likely to be transferred to a customary court where it would be treated amicably.
As the sheep is now the official culprit, South Soudanese authorities announced that it will serve a three-year sentence in a military camp in the country’s Lakes State.
