Rabat – African literature will be a “guest of honor” at the 2022 Rabat Book Fair, according to organizers during the fair’s press conference.

The book fair is coming back after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which “showed humanity’s deep need for literature.”

The celebration of African literature serves to empower Morocco’s African identity, the organizers said, citing Rabat’s current status as the continent’s capital of culture, another important symbol of this identity.

“The cultural side of Africa has a big importance, and with the strong presence of Morocco through its deep African side, the fair will be an occasion to strengthen all kinds of bilateral and multilateral cooperation with other African states,” a press release said.

The organizers also stressed that the celebration goes hand in hand with a royal strategy to strengthen Morocco’s position in the continent, and help elevate it through cooperation.

In addition to celebrating African literature, this year’s Rabat book fair will include various cultural activities with the participation of various names in the literature world.

There will also be activities centered around groups and organizations, and others dedicated to children.

While the fair usually takes place in Casablanca, this year’s event will be held in Rabat, due to the original space being used as a hospital to accommodate COVID-19 patients.

The 2020 book fair in Casablanca featured more than 700 exhibitors, displaying more than 100,000 works of literature.
