Rabat – Morocco and Israel intend to work closely together on several technological aspects, including artificial intelligence, agricultural technology, renewable energy, and smart cities.

Morocco’s Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation signed a deal with Israel’s Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology on Thursday to strengthen cooperation between the two in the field of technology.

The agreement encompasses cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence, agricultural technologies, renewable energies, and smart cities.

It also extends to the automotive sector, medical technologies, water desalination, food processing, information technology, space, and biotechnology.

Since the signing of the Abraham Accords in 2020, Israel has been keen to use its hi-tech and science development as a strategic pillar of its foreign policy.

A joint team of both countries will now be tasked with implementing the new agreement, to organize funding for projects, research, and seminars, among other activities.

The agreement is considered the first of its kind with Israel, although Morocco signed technology agreements with other countries in the Abraham Accords such as the UAE and Bahrain.

Morocco’s Minister of Higher Education, Abdellatif Miraoui said the agreement will help Morocco adapt to the world and enhance its education and research through joint-scientific programs, student exchanges and knowledge sharing.  “I am fully convinced that this partnership will open up broader opportunities ahead,” he emphasized.

Agreements between the two countries have encompassed the fields of agriculture, and defense, with Israel’s advanced high-tech development contributing to the two fields.

Just this past March, Morocco’s Ministry of Industry signed an agreement with Israel Aerospace Industries for cooperation in aerospace technologies.

Morocco established official relations with Israel towards the end of 2020. Since then, the two countries have strengthened their ties through various agreements and forums.
