Rabat – Morocco’s Yassine Id Yassine and Tarik Ben have secured two gold medals at the ongoing African Wrestling Championship in the city of El Jadida, Morocco, which is promoted with the hashtag #WrestleElJadida.
ID Yassine has won against South African Zander Bekker by 11-8 in the 48 kilograms category. Whereas Ben defeated Roehan Du Plessis, also from South Africa, with a 12-2 win in the 51 kilograms category.
The United World Wrestling posted videos of the two matches on their official Twitter account, displaying the great performance of the two Moroccan wrestlers.
The African Wrestling Championship was originally scheduled to take place from April 6 to 11, 2021, but was postponed to 17 – 22 May 2022.
The #WrestleElJadida African championship features 200 prominent wrestling stars from across the continent, including Olympic medalists Blessing Oborududu and Marwa Amri from Nigeria.
Moroccan wrestlers participating in the tournament’s men’s Freestyle category are Sofiane El Khamer in the 61 kilograms division, Otmane El Bahja (65kg), Abdelwahad Badri (70kg), Mohammed Moufrij (74kg), Youssef Ait Boulahri (79kg), Mohammed Eddaouahiri (86kg), Ahmed Serehali (92kg), Moussa Salih (97kg), and Anas Lamkabber (125kg).
The Greco-Roman wrestling category for men includes the Moroccan wrestlers Kamal Benabbou (55kg), Aymane Lakhfif (60kg), Fouad Fajari (63kg), Bilal El Bahja (67kg), Yassine Faraj (72kg), Aziz Boaulem (77kg), Mohamed Faiq (82kg), Reda Moueniss (87kg), Hamza Boumadiene (97kg), and Anas Lamkabber (130kg).
The Women’s Freestyle wrestling category includes 56 contestants, four of whom are Moroccan; Imane Boujnane in the 50kg division, Wissal El Gnaoui in the 53kg division, Zineb Hassoune in the 55kg division, and Nisrine Hammas in the 57kg division.
On May 17, the president of the Royal Moroccan Wrestling Federation Fouad Meskout was elected as the president of Africa’s United World Wrestling (UWW-Africa).
