Rabat – Morocco’s efforts in curbing irregular migration are “fundamental” for Europe and Spain, according to President of the Center for Hispano-Moroccan Studies Miguel Angel Puyol.
In a statement to Moroccan state media, Puyol commented on Morocco’s comprehensive humanist approach to migration management, and its vital importance to Spain and Europe. Describing Morocco’s role as “important,” Puyol stated that the North African country “is adopting a comprehensive and effective approach” to migration.
Puyol welcomed this week’s high-level meeting on migration issues between senior officials of the Spanish and Moroccan governments. He sees this Permanent Mixed Migration Group as a key symbol of Moroccan cooperation and support that is both “necessary and beneficial,” for Spain and Europe as a whole.
Both Spain and the European Union benefit greatly from Moroccan efforts to combat irregular migration which has become a “global phenomenon with multinational dimensions,” the head of the Center for Hispano-Moroccan Studies pointed out.
Puyol further pointed to Spanish-Moroccan cooperation on “Operation Marhaba 2022.” This annual operation aims to facilitate the flow of millions of Moroccan diaspora members who make their way south for the summer holidays.
This initiative has run smoothly for decades, seeing far-reaching cooperation between Morocco and Spain, yet the 2021 diplomatic spat between the two countries interrupted this process.
With Spain and Morocco again seeing eye-to-eye diplomatically, both legal and irregular migration is likely to again become a key point of regular discussion between the two neighbors.
